It’s easy to get in the same routine and walk your dog on the same route every day. You have the best intentions to take your dog on adventures but it’s hard to plan to drive 30 minutes to go somewhere new. What if there was a way to go on adventures in your own town?
What is Geocaching?
Enter geocaching! If you have never heard of geocaching before, it is kind of like a treasure hunt around the world. People hide containers and post about it on the website geocaching.com. You can then go find them yourself! There are sometimes little goodies inside but it is more about the fun of finding them. The team at Geocaching do a better job explaining it than me in this video.
It is a great way to go to a place you have never been before but is right in your backyard! You can check out the places have been to before in a new light. You have probably walked by many geocaches without even realizing it. They vary in difficulty and size but it is always fun trying to find them.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes! Most geocaches are in public areas where dogs are allowed. Some dogs love to sniff the container you found or even can help you find it! Occasionally there is a fun toy perfect for them in the container as well. Just double check the description to make sure dogs are allowed because some areas may not allow dogs.
How do I get started?
Just start by downloading the app and creating an account. From there look to see what geocaches are nearby you – they show up as green dots on the map. There are different types of geocaches but stick to the green ones if you are just getting started. As you do more you’ll see there is a whole community of geocachers. Just pick a geocache and give it a go!
What’s your experience?
I have been geocaching with my family and dogs for over 8 years now. As a family, we have found over 1,000 geocaches across the world. My mom has even hidden 18 geocaches of her own! It is a great experience to get outside and to visit new places. We love doing it as a family with our dogs – you never know what you will find!
