1. Make your “dream” a “goal”
Write down your dream on a piece of paper. Is it something like “I want to travel to Europe” or “I want to own my own business” or “I dream to own my own dog”? That’s great! It’s a huge step just writing down your dream on paper and putting written words to the thoughts in your head.
Now take it one step further. Change all the longing words such as “want” and “dream” to definite words like “I will” or “I plan.” So now they become “I will travel to Europe” and “I will own my own business” and “I plan to own my own dog.” They just became so much more real! Now read your goal out loud to yourself and BELIEVE IT!
2. Put a number to it
So you may be thinking, “That’s great and all, I can write this down but I will never be able to afford it.” Are you sure? How much do you think it will cost? If you don’t have a real number and are just guessing – figure it out!
Here’s a quick calculation as an example.
- Flight from Providence, RI to Dublin, Ireland: $400
- Hotel for 6 nights: $500
- Food for 6 nights: $300
- Drinks for 6 nights: $100
- Transportation: $90
- Gifts: $60
- Overall estimate: $1,450
Okay, now you know exactly how much you would need to save to travel to Ireland for 6 nights. And I rounded up, so if you stayed in a hostel or didn’t eat out as much it would cost even less.
So now what would you have to do to have that much money saved? That’s 290 $5 coffees or 58 weeks of a daily coffee. So in a year just by not spending $5 a day on coffee, you would have enough to travel. Think about how much quicker you could save that much by putting aside more than $5 a day!
3. Think about the when
The next problem you may be thinking is – “I would never have time for that.” I believe that you create what time you have. You decide how to spend your time.
In the case of a vacation, you may work full time but is it possible to get a week off? Save your vacation days or instead of that trip you always take to the lake do something different!
For long-term goals, set aside 30 minutes a day to work on your goal, distraction-free – you’ll be surprised how much you get done when you aren’t checking your phone or FaceBook every 5 minutes.
Does this actually work?
Let me use myself as an example. I am working full time at a start-up games company in Dublin, Ireland currently. 2 years ago, I moved to Ireland and I have been working at this company for a year and a half. Recently, I broke up with my boyfriend of two years. I knew I wanted a change. What is my dream? I have always wanted a dog of my own. And I always want to travel and live in different countries. So why not both?
1. I would love to travel the world with my dog. This becomes:
I plan to travel the world with my dog.
2. I have all the financials planned out how much it would cost me. In the cheaper cities, it is actually less expensive than living here in Dublin!
3. I get up an hour earlier than I used to in order to work on building this business so I can support myself and my pup. I’m continuing to work full time while
I also have a date when this is all going to kick off – in February. It helps that is when my lease it up as I would have to find a new place to live then anyways.
